Gascoigne Bluff Park was the site of a celebration of cultural heritage during the Georgia Sea Islands Festival. This annual festival under the oaks showcases African American musical traditions, art and craftsmanship, and the food of the barrier islands. A highlight of the event was a performance by the Geechee Gullah Ring Shouters with “Ma Bessie,” who is in her late nineties and continues to keep this tradition alive. This festival is truly an island treasure. (Geechee Gullah Ring Shouters photo provided by Griffin Bufkin.)
