More than 300 guests were in attendance when Georgia Governor Nathan Deal and First Lady Sandra Deal visited Jekyll Island to cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony for Camp Jekyll. The new facility occupies the same site as the original Jekyll Island 4-H Center and now houses 12 new buildings, including a new state-of-the-art learning center with auditorium and classrooms named for the First Lady. Camp Jekyll is a JIA-owned property which will be operated by Georgia 4-H starting in February and will continue the tradition of teaching youth about the rich environmental life inhabiting the area. There will be a multitude of programs run by the Georgia 4-H staff and other camps hosted on the campus. Jones Hooks stated, “Camp Jekyll will now reach more than 13,000 children annually through environmental education and summer camp programs.”
