No Man is an Island
When John Donne (1572-1631) wrote the phrase, "no man is an island" in Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions, Meditation XVII in 1624, he was NOT referring to my receding hairline.
Slowly but surely my forehead has grown and, like the beaches on St. Simons at low tide, I now have a "sandbar" head of hair. The problem now is how to cover up the sandbar!
The traditional "comb over" has been working okay for me, I guess, but the other day, when I was in CVS looking for razors, I came across a whole slew of hair gel products for men! There was everything from Hair Mayonnaise to Axe Hair Gel to Aveda Pure Performance Grooming Clay.
I settled on a can of American Crew Pomade. I don't really know what pomade is, actually, but I saw George Clooney wearing "Dapper Dan" pomade in the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou and Don Draper uses it in Mad Men, so I figured I'd try it.
I got home, wet my hair, and started experimenting on a new "look." After several attempts, I noticed that every style I tried made me look the same way I do when I get up every day -- disheveled! The worse part was that as the pomade dried, it stuck like glue. I gave up, washed the pomade out of my hair (which was not easy) and settled on the couch for the Breaking Bad marathon.
The next morning I rolled out of bed, half asleep, stepped on the dog by accident, tripped on the bedside table, knocking it over and breaking off an end piece, then walked to the bathroom to shower & shave.
As I looked in the mirror, I realized I already have the "just woke up" bed head look every morning when I get out of bed! Why pay $18.95 for hair pomade to try to achieve that look? Now if I can just figure out another use for this full can of pomade. I wonder if pomade works on wood.
