Swimmer Kate Douglass, the granddaughter of Marsh’s Edge resident and Sea Island member Joyce Douglass, had quite a successful showing in the 2024 Olympic Games in July and August. She competed in four events and won medals in all of them. She began the meet by swimming in the heats and the final of the 4×100m freestyle relay, helping the U.S. win the silver medal. She set an American record with her gold medal winning time in the 200m breaststroke. She won a silver medal in the 200m individual medley. She also took home a gold medal for swimming heats that led to the U.S. team win in the 4x100m medley relay.
And these Olympic medals aren’t Kate’s first, she won her first major international medal (a bronze) at the 2020 Olympic Games. She also won three medals at the 2022 World Championships, six medals, including two golds, at the 2023 World Championships, and five medals, including two golds at the 2024 World Championships. Kate is considered one of the greatest swimmers in NCAA history, for her record while competing for the University of Virginia (2019-2023). We know her grandmother Joyce couldn’t be more proud! Sports excellence is not unfamiliar to the Douglass family, Kate’s father William is a member of the 2009 inaugural class of the Frederica Academy Sports Hall of Fame.
