You can practically hear a grin on General Manager Zach Albright’s face in phone conversation discussing the new stores opening and the upcoming theater addition at the Glynn Place Mall. He says if you haven’t been to Glynn Place recently, it’s time to come see the changes. Zach has spearheaded some amazing progress, increasing the occupancy in the mall by almost 20%, bringing it to its current occupancy rate of 97%, but he’s nowhere near done!
New store leases and renovations are the talk of day. Belk, who joins Sears and J.C. Penney as the three department stores making up the mall’s five anchors, recently opened a new 12,500 sq. ft. Belk Home Store. The old Shoe Dept. expanded their space and completely remodeled into a sparkling, new state of the art Shoe Dept. ENCORE store that boasts an amazing inventory of – ready for this, ladies? – more than 17,000 shoe selections! For the guys, there’s the new ESPN Radio studio, which Albright explains is the only one like it in the nation. They record live local broadcasts and also broadcast ESPN coverage throughout the day. If you want to see local sports stars, the ESPN studio is a good place to find them.
A visit to Nacho’s Mexican Restaurant in the food court allows us some time on the mainland with our island friends, Nacho and Jorge. That’s right; you can still get the delicious authentic Mexican dishes and generous portions that they serve up on St. Simons Island right here at the mall. If you have a taste for the Caribbean, then Island Jerk is ready to fix you up a plate of their spicy specialties or indulge you with a cool beverage that will have you searching for a hammock nearby. This is more than just your average mall food court fare!
The biggest news Albright has to share is the highly anticipated opening of the new 22,000 sq. ft. GTX (Georgia Theatre Extreme) 3D Theatre addition. This addition to the 11 screen GTC Glynn Place Stadium Cinemas will add 2 more stadium screens and a GTX 3D theater for an IMAX movie experience on a screen 5 stories tall and 80 feet wide. Who’s ready for that next Avengers movie?! There will also be a new lobby and marquis, as well as an attached full-service restaurant offering more than popcorn, hot dogs, and nachos for your dinner-and-a-movie nights. No more need to drive to Jacksonville or Savannah to get the big, blockbuster IMAX experience!
Glynn Place Mall now hosts more community events as well, from fashion shows to music and expos. You’ll find Third Thursday Family Fun nights in the Center Court each month. On August 3, there will be a Back to School Fest with plenty of back to school sales; activities, exhibitions and performances by different groups and musicians; bounce houses and more! And don’t forget to come out and shop during Tax Free Weekend on August 10-11.
