6th Annual CCGA CHEM 1100 Cook-Off to Benefit Second Harvest
to
College of Coastal Georgia Brunswick Campus 3700 Altama Ave., Brunswick, Georgia 31520
The public is invited to come out and watch culinary students at the College of Coastal Georgia show off their skills and food knowledge at the 6th Annual CHEM 1100 Cook-Off to benefit America’s Second Harvest Food Bank. The cook-off will be held Wednesday, June 26, from 11:00am-12:30pm at the College’s Campus Center. The best part? You’re also invited to taste!
For the cook-off, each student will create a dish using ingredients that utilize canned foods which are sometimes difficult to find a use for but are available from the America’s Second Harvest warehouse. Students are given three minutes to select ingredients from the bank for their recipe, and those ingredients have to make up 80 percent of their respective dishes. They will create healthy, easy-to-follow recipes with nutritional information. Paper copies of each recipe will be available for attendees to take and try at home. Visitors will be able to taste the dishes and vote for their favorite with a donation of $1. All proceeds will be given to the local America’s Second Harvest Food Bank. Additional cash donations, non-perishable canned goods, and paper products will also be accepted.
CCGA Chem 1100 cook off 2018
The annual cook-off serves as a service-learning project for students' Introductory Chemistry summer course, which is geared towards food science studies. Service-learning projects allow students to apply skills learned in the classroom in real-world situations and collaborate with local agencies. By partnering with America’s Second Harvest, students will reflect on the connection between food and chemistry, understand food scarcity, and the importance of addressing community needs. The top three students who receive the most votes will be awarded with gift cards to the College bookstore.
