Coastal Green Scene Presents: Bag It!
to
Golden Isles Arts & Humanities - The Ritz Theatre 1530 Newcastle St., Brunswick, Georgia 31520
Community leaders at GreenScene of Coastal Georgia are hosting a screening of the award-winning environmental documentary Bag It followed by a LIVE Q&A with the star of Bag It, Jeb Berrier, and local environmental experts from Keep Golden Isles Beautiful, Georgia Sea Turtle Center, The Farmer & The Larder, UGA Marine Extension and the Bring Your Own Bag Project.
Bag It follows “everyman” Jeb Berrier as he tries to make sense of our dependence on plastic bags. Although his quest starts out small, Jeb soon learns that the problem extends past landfills to oceans, rivers and ultimately human health.
The average American uses about 500 plastic bags each year, for about twelve minutes each. This single-use mentality has led to the formation of a floating island of plastic debris in the Pacific Ocean more than twice the size of Texas.
The film explores these issues and identifies how our daily reliance on plastic threatens not only waterways and marine life, but human health, too. Two of the most common plastic additives are endocrine disruptors, which have been shown to link to cancer, diabetes, autism, attention deficit disorder, obesity and infertility.
The screening at the Historic Ritz Theatre is part of Bag It’s campaign to urge towns across the country to become “Bag It Towns”. The term “Bag It” comes from an alternate definition meaning “quit”, in other words, stop using plastic bags. Doing so would require Brunswick, Georgia to ban plastic bag use voluntarily or via ordinance and/or to pass an ordinance that places a small charge on single-use disposable bags. Cities including Washington, DC and San Francisco, as well as other countries such as Ireland, Italy and China have already implemented similar policies to curb their plastic use.
GreenScene of Coastal Georgia recognizes the importance of reducing single-use plastic use for the safety of our community and environment.
Screen time is approximately 1 hour. There will be a cocktail hour preceding the film from 5-6pm; 6:15 screening, then live Q&A at 7:15pm. Event is FREE and open to the public, but donations are accepted and appreciated. RSVP online at www.GreenSceneGA.org to make sure you get a seat.
