NAMES Project Foundation AIDS Memorial Quilt on Display
to
College of Coastal Georgia Brunswick Campus 3700 Altama Ave., Brunswick, Georgia 31520
PFLAG Brunswick is thrilled to be bringing the NAMES Project Foundation AIDS Quilt to the College of Coastal Georgia, on October 16 and 17. This is our second annual Quilt event and we are excited to be working again with the North Florida Chapter of the NAMES Project Foundation and CCGA on this amazing and important project.
Did you know that Glynn County is home to more people with HIV/AIDS than any Georgia area outside Atlanta? The equivalent of approximately 400 of every 100,000 residents were living with HIV in 2009 in Glynn County. In 2010, we had 2,167 people living with HIV/AIDS. That year, 88 new HIV cases and 55 new AIDS cases were diagnosed. What is most alarming is that more than 38 percent of new cases in the region were among people ages 20-29.*
PFLAG Brunswick's mission, from its inception, has been education and support. It is imperative that we educate our children about an epidemic that continues to rage on. While many of us "grew up" with AIDS, hearing about it from multiple sources, and knowing at least one person who was affected by the disease in some way, there are many today that are simply not aware of how to prevent this disease, treatment options for those infected, and/or what the Quilt itself represents. It is our hope that this event will shed new light on an already bright light in this country's history.
In addition to the display of the quilts, we have partnered with the Georgia Coastal Health District to offer free, confidential, HIV/AIDS testing on October 16 from 10am-2pm in the Campus Center Lobby. The response to this testing last year was overwhelming, and we are excited to offer it again this year.
This display of the AIDS Quilt was made possible by the following sponsors:
