CommUNITY Connections
In addition to local branches of well-known civic organizations such as the YMCA, Rotary International, Kiwanis, Lions, and Pilot Club, there are a significant number of non-profits and charitable organizations in the Golden Isles. EIL has compiled a list of these organizations to let community members know what services may be available to them through these groups, and to provide information about how you can support these organizations and their charitable works by donating or volunteering. We compiled this list using information provided by the non-profits, but we’re aware that this list is not exhaustive and there are some organizations for which we did not have contact information or that may have otherwise escaped our attention. Please be aware that there are also fundraisers held by and for our local schools and churches that also could use our support. Follow the Elegant Island Living website calendar to keep up with fundraisers and community events.
100 Women Who Care SSI
100 Women Who Care SSI (100WWC) is a group of women interested in supporting the Golden Isles community by combining their donations to impact local charities. The original 100WWC initiative began in Michigan in 2006 when Karen Dunigan gathered a group of women together as a quick and efficient fundraising idea. Following an hour-long meeting, each of the women wrote a check for $100 directly to the local charity they selected, raising $12,800 to buy 300 new cribs. Since then, chapters have formed across the country. Cathy Foley, Sandy Metzger, Susan Mundy, Melissa Stroud, and Catherine Wood created the SSI chapter, motivated by this unique opportunity to significantly impact the lives of those in need in our community. Their activism is founded in the belief that when people join together they can do more as a group than they can by themselves. 100WWC’s members come from all walks of life, and believe that acting collectively they have the ability to contribute to the growth of our community in ways that they may never have thought possible as individuals.
100WWC members meet four times a year to collectively nominate and vote for a local charitable organization to receive a one-time donation of $100 from each member. Any member can nominate a non-profit and three are randomly selected to give presentations prior to the vote. So, during each quarterly nomination process, members learn about at least three charities. With that knowledge, not only do they choose the donation recipient, they also gain knowledge about these organizations, their needs, and the services they provide, giving members the opportunity to dig deeper and find volunteer possibilities within the community.
Membership in 100WWC continues to grow daily, and currently includes 220 women, thanks to this tremendous community with very generous constituents. The first charity to receive donations from 100WWC was Memory Matters, receiving $18,200 from 182 members in Winter 2020. In Spring 2020, 100WWC allowed their members to choose one of two charities that received close votes: Beloved Ministries and The Firebox Initiative. $21,550 from 208 members was distributed to them ($10,850 and $10,700, respectively). The Summer 2020 recipient was just selected at time of writing as Hand in Hand of Glynn. You’ll find information about these organizations listed alphabetically in the list that follows.
If you’re interested in joining these community-minded ladies or learning more about what they do and how non-profits can be nominated, visit their website.

Adoption-Share
Adoption-Share is leveraging technology to bring transparency and reform to the adoption process. Their most recent application Family-Match (family-match.org) leverages data and predictive analytics to more efficiently and appropriately connect children in foster care with waiting families. Family-Match uses compatibility assessments co-authored by two former senior researchers at eHarmony that hones in on key attributes found in peer reviewed research that can predict success or failure in foster and adoption placements. Their tool provides a relational fit score which is followed once the child is placed in an adoptive home. Family-Match applies the learning from the outcomes data to reiterate their computational model used to generate relational fit scores over time. Their work has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and by Anderson Cooper on CNN. They are currently seeking a part-time volunteer who has a knack for Excel and organization. They’re also super open to volunteers with design/communications/PR background! Donations are important to fund the program. Adoption-share has a critical need of $10,000 that they are hoping to secure before year’s end. Visit the website to give.

Beloved Ministries
Beloved Ministries helps single moms and their children encounter and experience the transforming power and redemptive love of Jesus Christ by connecting them to each other and to Him so they can begin the restoration process spiritually, emotionally, and physically. They believe single mom homes can overcome many challenges when they have a place to connect and learn both Biblical truths and practical life skills. Beloved offers bi-monthly events where single mothers and their children enjoy a meal and fellowship. Free childcare is provided while moms listen to speakers who address topics like “Finding Hope in the Midst of Hard Circumstances,” and “Parenting as a Single Mother and Boundaries.” Moms then meet in small groups where a mentor facilitates deeper discussions with Q&A and more individualized time. These mentors stay in touch with the moms in between meetings to encourage and walk along beside them. The children are also being poured into during the gatherings with their own intentional program by the Children’s Ministry team, that includes games, a Bible lesson and lots of love. Volunteer opportunities are available for Children’s Ministry team members, small group leaders, and food servers. Donations are welcome and can be made by check payable to Beloved Ministries; P.O. Box 30864 Sea Island, GA 31561 or Venmo: @belovedministries. You can also support the ministry by spreading the word to single moms you know and inviting them to come to a Beloved gathering. CASA Glynn/Friends of CASA
The mission of CASA Glynn, Inc., also serving Camden County, is to recruit, train, and supervise volunteers from our community to advocate for the best interest of abused and neglected children. Each year, over 500,000 children in the United States are thrust into court through no fault of their own. Some are victims of violence, psychological torment or sexual abuse. Others have been neglected or even abandoned by their own parents. A complex legal network of lawyers, social workers, and judges work tirelessly to try to give these children the attention they deserve – but the children are often frightened and confused. They need a voice that can be heard in the court. Appointed by judges, CASA volunteers typically handle just one case at a time—and commit to staying on that case until the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. While others may come and go, CASA volunteers provide that one constant that children need in order to thrive. Volunteers are screened and fully trained. Application information and forms are available on the website. Donations are critical to maintain CASA’s mission as funding has been cut in recent months and the annual spring fashion luncheon fundraiser was cancelled due to the pandemic. The support of generous donors keeps the program alive. Donations are easy via the Donate Now tab on the website.

Under the care of the Society, these buildings are operated as one of only a few history museums in the state accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The Society opens both museums to the public seven days a week, welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors every year and conducting tours for thousands of students of all ages. Contributions help the Society preserve the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum, the World War II Home Front Museum, and provide year-round programming for adults and schoolchildren. A Preservation Maintenance Fund for the World War II Home Front Museum and the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum and Keeper’s Dwelling have been established, and the income generated from these funds will be used to complete a regular schedule of essential work on the historic buildings. The funds are separately held and restricted so as to ensure that all funds are used exclusively for the prescribed purpose; the funds are collectively managed for efficiency and accounted for as an asset of the Society. Detailed preservation maintenance plans are available upon request. You can help preserve the rich history of Coastal Georgia for generations to come. Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation (CCGF)
The mission statement of CCGF is simple: Strengthening our communities through engaged philanthropy. Community foundations serve to bring together people, businesses and organizations to promote civic and community betterment through strategic and solution-focused giving. By understanding both the needs of the community and the interests of fundholders, they are able to thoughtfully match these entities as partners and provide sustained, mindful giving. “You don't give to us, you give through us.” By establishing a fund, a donor is able to take advantage of significant tax benefits while directing the impact of their donation both now and in the future. 2020 has been a year of pivoting as we all learn how to navigate in a socially distanced world. There are several collaborative events with area non-profits that have been canceled for the remainder of 2020 due to the pandemic, but CCGF has been able to be highly impactful nonetheless. The Community Emergency Needs Fund with the United Way distributed $644,000 to 27 agencies since April, with a focus on agencies in Glynn, Camden and McIntosh counties dealing with issues related to food distribution, providing health services and then added assistance with economic recovery and business restoration to later rounds of grant giving. Community Foundations are accessible to everyone and can, quite simply, make navigating the sometimes overwhelming decision on how to direct funds a simpler process. At the end of the day, CCGF is here to help donors/fund-holders maximize the impact of their philanthropy.

The Firebox Initiative
If you’ve been a faithful EIL reader for the past few years, you’re probably familiar with The Firebox Initiative, founded by the folks of Southern Soul Barbeque as a way to give back to the community in the way the community helped them following the fire that destroyed their building and disrupted their livelihood in March 2010. Their mission is to provide a helping hand in the form of financial grants to those in our local Coastal Georgia hospitality and service industry family in need of emergency assistance, as well as scholarship opportunities for qualifying applicants. During the pandemic they have served free meals to service industry employees and families and distributed funds to help with rent, utility bills, and other expenses while restaurants were shuttered and employees were out of work. While Firebox is typically funded by the multi-day BBQ extravaganza known as the Firebox BBQ on the Bluff that hosts pitmasters from across the nation, this year’s event has been cancelled. However, our Firebox friends are known innovators and creative thinkers, so keep an eye out for random pop-ups and collaborative dinners with invited guest pitmasters, chefs, and makers, with proceeds that will benefit Firebox. You can help them out directly by making donations at Southern Soul Barbeque or online via the Firebox website. If you’re a service industry worker facing financial hardship, you can apply for assistance online there too.

Glynn Visual Arts
Established in 1953, Glynn Visual Arts at 106 Island Drive, St. Simons Island, serves as the community’s visual arts center. Its mission is “to enrich our community by stimulating interest and participation in the visual arts,” which GVA has done in Glynn County since 1967. Originally founded as the Glynn Art Association the 501(c)3 nonprofit became Glynn Visual Arts in 1984 and flourishes today as a community arts center serving St Simons Island and the surrounding Glynn County. GVA practices its vision daily of “fostering creativity to liberate, inspire, entertain, educate and nurture our community through the arts,” via gallery exhibits, adult and children’s classes, workshops, summer camps, arts festivals, pottery studio and gallery gift shop. GVA is the official visual arts partner for The Community of Hope initiative located at the former Risley High School in an underserved area of Brunswick. Glynn Visual Arts also helps to lead the Brunswick Mural Project: "Let's Paint Brunswick Beautiful." This public art project continues to grow, with the fiscal support of Glynn Visual Arts, but is also growing organically as a high profile movement in Brunswick.
GVA volunteers are part of the family of spirited, creative thinkers and doers that make the organization so much fun for the GVA community. Volunteer opportunities include working with the education committee to help shape programming on-site and in community outreach such as with Rise Risley. The exhibition committee also welcomes volunteer support to help identify exhibitions that are appropriate for the GVA gallery and to help with hanging the exhibits, hosting receptions and more. The special events committee is always appreciative of volunteers who help with event ideation, marketing, event set-up and take down and more. They always appreciate volunteers to work with the children’s classes, camps and annual festivals.
One of the most fulfilling ways to donate to GVA is to join the membership of your community arts center. Not only does membership help to support GVA but also provides members with valuable benefits including discounted classes and more. Friend memberships are available for as little as $50 annually, up to the Collector level at $1,000 annually. All purchases in the fabulous gallery gift shop also go to support GVA and it’s member artists. GVA accepts donations via their website or a check to GVA, 106 Island Drive, SSI, GA 31522.
GVA and the special events committee and board of directors are working diligently to innovate on the in-person gatherings that everyone misses. They are planning a number of smaller, “safer” fundraising events for the months ahead and will bring back the signature “Art of …” annual affair in 2021 at to-be-determined date. The GVA Gallery with ever-changing exhibits remains open to public Tuesday – Saturday from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Until further notice, all staff and visitors are required to wear a mask and practice social distancing with no more than 10 visitors in the gallery at once. They’re looking forward to the return of exhibit opening receptions with fun people, beautiful art, and delicious food and beverage.

Hand in Hand of Glynn
Hand in Hand of Glynn was organized to help end homelessness in Glynn County. They believe in permanent supportive affordable housing and the idea of “Housing First,” considering housing to be a right, not a reward for a positive clinical outcome. Everyone deserves a safe, dry place to call home. The group purchased a 4.25-acre parcel in Brunswick on which they are building 60 tiny homes to house those experiencing homelessness. Each 240 square foot home will have its own kitchen, full bath and bedroom/sitting area and a covered porch. Each house costs $30,000 or $35,000 furnished. Once housed, they will provide residents with services on site to help them work on other issues they may be facing. To that end, they are completing a Community Center that will house classrooms for instruction in life skills, medical services facilities, laundry, kitchen, and an office for the executive director. There will be community gardens for growing fresh fruits and vegetables. Brunswick has a 39% poverty rate and is not only one of the poorest cities in the state, but also in the nation. While their focus is to house single adults, they hope this gated community of tiny homes becomes a model for housing other people experiencing homelessness in our community and in small towns throughout Georgia. Their goal is to change the trajectory of a life, one tiny home at a time. For volunteer and donation or sponsorship opportunities, visit their website.
